Young Fine Gael is calling for the Government to prioritise purpose-built student accommodation in urban areas with higher-education institutions. The organisation welcomed the publication of the National Student Accommodation Strategy in 2018 but believes that more needs to be done in order to achieve the unprecedented demand for suitable student accommodation.
YFG believes that student accommodation units need to be affordable and suggests that they could be partly funded by local government and third-level institutions themselves.
In addition, we are calling on the Government to create a statutory requirement for all universities to provide suitable accommodation for at least 15% of their student population.
The proposal is included in Young Fine Gael’s Pre-Budget Submission: Striving for Progress, which was unveiled at the end of August.
