Youth Unemployment almost DOUBLES under FF in just 1 year
Young Fine Gael (YFG) have today warned that mass emigration could again become a reality for our young people, in light of the recent CSO Live Register figures for December, released last week.
YFG President Barry Walsh has said: "The latest CSO figures reveal that the number of young people under the age of 25 on the Dole has almost doubled in the space of a year, increasing from 33,000 to 62,000 during 2008 – a rise of 87%. These figures are terrifying. However, the Government does not even seem to know that there is a problem.
"It is now also case that young men are twice as likely to be out of work as young women, a fact which is reflective of the collapse in employment in the construction sector. Their problems are made worse by the fact that there are now tens of thousands of young men who do not have the skills to get a well paid job in another sector of the economy. Even highly skilled and highly educated graduates from our third level institutions face the worst employment prospects in 15 years.
"The Government really needs to get a handle on this serious crisis. We simply cannot afford to have so many young people out of work, without risking the spectre of mass emigration once again. In the face of this, the Taoiseach has disappeared from public view, and the Tánaiste is utterly clueless, as her incompetent handling of the Dell pullout showed.
