YFG Launches Youth Unemployment Policy Document and calls for Minister of State for Youth Employment

Young Fine Gael is today (Wednesday) launching its Youth Unemployment Document Exiting the Crisis, Preparing for the Future and will be calling for a Minister of State to be given special responsibility for Youth Employment ahead of the cabinet reshuffle in the summer. Simon Harris, TD will launch the document at the Oscar Wilde statue in Merrion Square Park at 1.15pm.

The policy document was formulated by the Young Fine Gael Policy Sub-Committee and offers specific policy recommendations covering the Education system, Social Welfare, Taxation, Childcare, Young Farmers and Entrepreneurship.

Speaking ahead of the Policy Launch, YFG President Dale McDermott commented 'I am proud of the excellent work over the previous few months by the Policy Sub-Committee and I believe the recommendations within, will direct all government departments to make youth employment a priority. Given that one in four under the age of 24 are without work, Young Fine Gael believes the government should give responsibility for Youth Employment to a Minister of State as part of the cabinet reshuffle.'

'Our policy document makes strong recommendations including making the leaving certificate compulsory for school leavers, increasing multilingualism amongst new entrants to the jobs market and introducing mutual obligation within our welfare system. Speaking to members across the country, young people want a career, not just a job.'
