#YFG15 Resolution - An Increase In The Minimum Wage to €9.35 - Young Fine Gael

#YFG15 Resolution - An Increase In The Minimum Wage to €9.35

Resolution:
An Increase In The Minimum Wage to €9.35
Presented at the Young Fine Gael National Conference, Limerick, March 2015

Proposed by the General Richard Mulcahy Branch on Saturday March 7th

Recognising:

  • That since the year 2000, the base rate of the minimum rate has remained static - bar a brief period where Fianna Fáil took the unprecedented move of reducing it, before a Fine Gael-led Government immediately restored it to its previous level.
  • That the cost of living, particularly in the rented accommodation sector, has increased dramatically and a minimum wage - even on a 40 hour week - is no longer enough to sustain many.
  • That we need to make it pay to work: workers have been the engine room of this economy and allowed us to move in the right direction again
  • That we recognise there is a middle ground to be found between ensuring businesses continue sustained growth, yet rewarding workers for persevering through difficult times

Acknowledging:

  • That the Government in 2014 promised to establish a Living Wage Committee which would examine the issues around the introduction of a Living Wage.
  • That the cost of living has increased by 23% between 2000 and 2015, yet the minimum wage has stayed stagnant

YFG calls on:

  • The Government to establish a new minimum wage rate, set at €9.35
  • That this move take effect from Budget 2016
  • That the Government continue to work to ease financial pressures on ordinary workers
