Young Fine Gael welcomes new 'Fair Fares' introduction

Young Fine Gael welcomes new 'Fair Fares' introduction from Minister for Transport and National Transport Authority

Young Fine Gael has welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, TD and the National Transport Authority of the introduction of a new cheaper and consistent fair structure across public transport for passengers below the age of 18.

Child fares will now apply to everyone aged between 4 and 18 (inclusive) using a Leap Card. The Child Fare offer will be extended to 16, 17 and 18 year olds from August. Many of these passengers currently pay adult fares once they reach 16.

Young Fine Gael's nationwide 'Fair Fares' campaign launched in March sought to bring public attention to the unfair and inconsistent structure whereby students aged between 16 - 18 years of age were paying full adult fares with no consistent policy regarding School IDs. The 'Fair Fares' campaign included a strong social media presence and lobbying the four main public transport providers and the NTA.

Speaking on the announcement YFG President Dale McDermott commented: "Young Fine Gael campaigned strongly for 'Fair Fares' and we are glad to see that we, representing young people all across Ireland, have finally seen progress in this area."

"The old structure whereby a student between 16 and 18 would be paying an adult fare was clearly unfair but the National Transport Authority has announced that students can look forward to cheaper and more consistent fares ahead of the new school term in September."

"Young Fine Gael felt that this was a very serious issue for young people across Ireland and we believe this decision will make a real difference to the cost of living challenges young people and their families face on a daily basis."
