Young Fine Gael opposes expanding the TV licence fee to laptops, tablets, and other personal devices.

Young Fine Gael opposes the announcement by Minister Denis Naughten that eligibility for payment of the TV licence fee is to expand to laptops, tablets, and other personal devices.

This move is regressive and unreasonable. It fails to account for the realities of modern communications and media consumption and will disproportionately affect young people who may not have a television in their homes or student accommodation but who rely on their personal devices to consume media.

President of YFG, Marian O'Donnell, remarked that, "If RTÉ is in financial difficulty, it is for RTÉ to adjust themselves like any other business. Younger audiences are currently moving to companies like Netflix, podcasts and steaming to consume their media - they are not watching traditional media like RTE. For RTE to try and target them to pay for a service they do not use is regressive and unreasonable, and we in YFG fully oppose any attempt to do so."
