Young Fine Gael demands "Fair Fares" for Students

Young Fine Gael call on the Minister for Transport and The National Transport Authority for urgent review of public transport fares for post-primary students

Young Fine Gael (YFG) is launching a national campaign for 'Fair Fares' for post-primary school students in Ireland across all four transport operators; Dublin Bus, Luas, Bus Eireann & Iarnrod Éireann. Students are being hit with a significant increased cost once they are over the age of 15 as they can no longer avail of the Schoolchild fare.

YFG are demanding Fair Fares and will highlight the unfair and inconsistent fare structure for students aged between 16 and 18, whereby these students are denied a school-going fare and subject to higher adult fares.

Speaking on this issue, YFG President Dale McDermott commented "Currently, there is no consistent fare structure for post-primary students using public transport in Ireland today. Particularly for those aged between 16 and 18 years of age, these students in some cases are subject to pay an adult fare, which is clearly unfair."

"The National Transport Authority has a public responsibility to ensure a consistent fare policy is followed across all providers and that students below the age of 18 are not paying adult fares. Hard-pressed families and students could see annual savings of €300 per child on average were a new school-going fare introduced. Students deserve a fairer deal in using public transport than this. No More Excuses." concluded Dale McDermott YFG President.
