Young Fine Gael condemns new fare hikes across public transport services – deliver value and choice for consumers

Young Fine Gael (YFG) has today strongly criticised the sanctioned fare hikes by the National Transport Authority across Dublin Bus, Iarnrod Eireann, Bus Eireann and Luas services and has called for greater competition and choice for hard-pressed consumers.

Speaking on the matter, YFG President, Dale McDermott said: "The sanctioned fare hikes hitting consumers' pockets this week, follow an unacceptable succession of annual fare increases in recent years which will further undermine public confidence in our public transport system. These hikes will greatly impact those on low incomes and students, for many of whom, public transport is not an option but a necessity in their daily lives."

"The NTA has a public responsibility to ensure value for money and choice for consumers and it is disappointing at the slow progress made towards introducing greater public choice in this area. These hikes have been justified as necessary to protect service delivery, however international experience has consistently showed that competitive tendering is the most effective means to ensuring value for money and choice for commuters; at a time of great hardship for many, any fare hikes should be the last resort."

"Low-income families and students on their daily commute will face a greater burden in getting to work and college in the New Year ahead unless the National Transport Authority makes a commitment now to quickly expand public choice in this area to ensure value for money."
