Young Fine Gael (YFG) has called on An Taoiseach to issue an immediate apology, on behalf of the State, to women who have suffered in Magdalene Laundries because of the actions of the state.
"Today, the women who suffered during their time in the Magdalene laundries had their story told. The state, according to the McAleese Report, contributed to 26% of all referrals to these institutions. These women were subsequently subjected to abuse in these institutions", said Patrick Molloy, YFG President.
"This afternoon, the government failed in its duty to apologise to the women who suffered horrible and harrowing experiences whilst in these Magdalene laundries. YFG believes that, in light of the McAleese Report, An Taoiseach should apologise unreservedly on behalf of the Government to the survivors of the laundries and strongly criticises his delay in doing so."
"The excuse of needing more time and having to 'digest' the report will simply not change the realities reported by survivors and verified in the report."
"Today was yet another sad day in the continuing story of institutional abuse in Ireland. We hope and expect that the government will give rightful redress to those who have suffered, in part, because of the failings of the state", concluded Patrick Molloy, YFG President.
