Young Drivers Scapegaoated in Dempsey Traffic Bill

Young Fine Gael President, Barry Walsh, today criticised the Road Traffic Bill by saying it seeks to scapegoat young learner drivers. "The Road Traffic Bill proposes the reduction to 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood for learner drivers, who are generally young people. The level for other drivers will be 50mg.

"This discriminates against young people by proposing they should have an almost zero alcohol level while driving. There is no evidence to suggest that the ability to drive while under the influence of alcohol improves with experience, the rules should be the same for older and younger drivers.

"If alcohol limits are changed for one cohort of drivers it should be the same across the board. The Minister should concentrate on teaching young people to drive properly by creating driving modules during transition year at school rather than singling them out as a danger to others."
