Young Commuters to unfairly bear brunt of carbon tax

In advance of the Budget next week, Dublin South YFG Chairperson and 2007 NUI Panel Seanad Candidate, John Kennedy, has highlighted the need for the Government to avoid adding an extra tax burden to young commuters. In particular, Mr. Kennedy said that the Government should bear in mind those affected by negative equity and recent flooding. He proposes a tax exemption scheme for commuters with respect to carbon tax.

Mr. Kennedy stated: "Young commuters are amongst the worst affected by the recession. Many took out mortgages at the height of the Celtic Tiger boom and now cannot sell their properties without making a considerable loss.

"We have seen the tragic results this week of the Fianna Fáil-led Ahern Government's policy of endorsing commuter developments to be built on flood plains. Young professionals affected by this can expect to see the introduction of a new carbon tax costing in the region of €250-€300 per year for those who must travel many kilometres by car to work given that there are often no public transport alternatives.

"Furthermore, there are many young households around the country where a mortgage was obtained on the basis of two incomes during the boom. Given rapidly rising unemployment, many of these households now have to survive on one income and must deal with the hardships of negative equity on that basis.

He finished by proposing specifically: "The Government should consider tax exemption and relief schemes with respect to carbon tax and other levies for those who: Bought a house with a 100% mortgage in the years 2004-2007 (most people in this category would be affected by negative equity)and travel over 300 km per five-day week to and from work."
