YFG Welcome Government's 'Can Do' Attitude on Jobs

Young Fine Gael President, Eric Keane, today (Tuesday) welcomed the Government's job initiative by saying: "The new Government, barely nine weeks in power, has shown it's intention to solve the difficulties facing Ireland.

"Rather than sit and wait for something to happen they have shown a clear intention to get young people back to work. The jobs initiative contains radical proposals to create a positive environment for employers to take on staff.

"I particularly applaud the initiatives relating to tourism which will reduce the VAT rate to nine per-cent for many tourism dependent businesses. Tourism is a large employer of students who need summer work.

"The proposals on job activation clearly show that the Government is delivering on Fine Gael proposals, including 'Hope for a Lost Generation', by creating 22,000 job placements in specific skills training, apprenticeships, back to education initiatives, Post-Leaving Cert courses, a Third Level Springboard Programme and a National Internship Programme.

"A capital investment stimulus programme of €4.6 billion will also benefit young unemployed construction workers by creating up to 50,000 jobs.

"The Government is clearly indicating an ability not only to incentivise employment but also to challenge interest groups by seeking reform of sectoral wage agreements.

"I welcome the 'can do' attitude that the Government is showing. Rather than accepting the bad hand they have been dealt they are using every avenue possible to turn the country around. Difficult decisions are necessary to get young people back to work and I am heartened that these decisions are being made."
