YFG Propose a Graduate Taxation System to fund Third Level Education

Young Fine Gael (YFG) are proposing the introduction of a graduate taxation system as soon as it is feasible for the government to implement it, as the fairest third level funding model giving equal opportunity and educational access to all, in a motion that was discussed and passed at our Summer School in Killarney, Co. Kerry last weekend.

"A financial model where graduates make no contribution at any stage is not viable in the current economic climate. YFG is calling for a graduate taxation system to be introduced as soon as is possible, as this allows graduate in employment to contribute to the cost of running an education system they have had the value from, when they are in a position to pay," YFG President, Patrick Molloy said.

"Until any graduate taxation system comes into existence, the interim system for college funding must support all students according to what their means are, so that we can give all students the educational opportunities they need for life."

"YFG fully supports the need for a well-funded third level education system. Our students and young people need funding model in place that offers them the opportunity to undertake education, graduate, gain employment and then make the contribution towards their education. To educate students to the necessary level, our universities and institutes of technology need funding to develop cutting-edge research and also need to cater for the increased student population over the last two decades – which has put increasing pressures on the funding of third level education in Ireland." Patrick Molloy continued.

Motion - YFG calls for the introduction of a graduate taxation system, as a means to fund Ireland's ailing third level sector, as soon as is feasible and that any interim measures provide all necessary supports for students, reflecting their means, to continue in full time education.
