YFG Opposes Proposals for History's Removal as a Distinct Subject for the Junior Certificate

Young Fine Gael (YFG) have opposed proposals for History's removal as a distinct subject on the Junior Certificate in a proposal at their Summer School in Killarney, Co. Kerry this weekend.

"This motion is about offering a choice to the youth of Ireland. Irish scholars of history are world renowned and to see a generation deprived of that opportunity to learn, understand and engage with history would be detrimental to our education system, not to mention our academic standing internationally," YFG Regional Organiser, MJ Murphy said.

"As a graduate of history, I was delighted to see this motion carried by the membership. We as a nation are defined by our nation. It makes us who we are."

"They say we must learn from our past mistakes and unfortunately that is very relevant in Ireland. Our future history books must reflect the difficulties that our young generation faces so that we can ensure that mistakes made in our nation's past are not repeated in the future."

"The Young Fine Gael National Executive were very happy to see this motion passed by members from all across the country, at our Garret FitzGerald Summer School in Kilkenny this weekend," MJ Murphy continued.
