YFG calls on Minister Hogan 'to allow the people to decide' on Dublin Mayor

Young Fine Gael has today (Tuesday April 1st) called on the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, TD, to proceed with the Dublin Mayor vote, despite the rejection of the plan from Fingal County Council.

While Fingal County Council has strongly rejected the proposal, the other three Dublin local authorities have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the plan. YFG believes that allowing a veto for any Dublin council was unfair and that a simple majority of councillors in the region should allow the referendum to proceed.

Given the clear mandate for political reform at the last general election and that over 80% of councillors within Dublin have supported the proposal for a Mayor; YFG is calling for Minister Hogan to carefully examine all options to ensure the plebiscite should proceed.

President Dale McDermott stated "Young Fine Gael believes Minister Hogan should allow the people of Dublin to decide on the plebiscite for Dublin Mayor. Across the world, we have seen the clear impact a directly elected mayor can have on cities. In many cases, they are the CEO, directly accountable for taxpayer's money, essential for attracting inward investment and reforming public services. The people will lose trust in government only if we lose trust in them first."
