YOUNG FINE GAEL CALLS FOR REAL AND PROPER DEBATE ON RESPONSIBLE ALCOHOL USE
Focusing on the price of a pint is missing the point

Young Fine Gael (YFG) has today (Monday 5th January) called for a proper debate on the responsible use of alcohol in response to recent publications and commentary in the media criticising the UK pub group - J.D. Wetherspoons - for selling pints of lager for €2.50.

'Recent demands for the immediate introduction of minimum pricing of alcohol per unit following the arrival of Wetherspoons is not going to address the severe and chronic lack of education that young people in Ireland experience with regard to responsible alcohol use. Focusing the debate on the price of a pint is entirely missing the point in our opinion' commented Dale McDermott, President of Young Fine Gael.

'By introducing minimum pricing of alcohol into our pubs, you will not only be punishing the irresponsible few, but the responsible many. Instead, we should recognise that publicans have a responsibility to ensure that people drinking in their premises are drinking responsibly' added Dale McDermott, President of Young Fine Gael.

'Young Fine Gael has a very clear history on calling for responsible alcohol use. We believe the best way to tackle our widespread problem with alcohol misuse is not through bans and restrictions, but rather real, proper and early education for young people throughout our country. Our recent policy on Mental Health 'Positive Thinking, Positive Actions' specifically addressed this topic and offers Government a real solution to this problem' concluded Dale McDermott, President of Young Fine Gael.
