YFG Calls for Abortion Rights for Woman in Cases of Non-Viable Pregnancies

YFG Calls for Legislation for the Abortion Rights for the Woman in Cases of Ectopic and Non-Viable Pregnancies Where the Child has no Chance for Survival Following Birth

Speaking proposing the motion, Robert O'Sullivan, member of the YFG National Executive said:

"Even after the passing of the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill, many Irish women will still be forced to travel aboard to undergo a termination in the event of an ectopic pregnancy or non-viable foetal abnormality"

"The current law shows no compassion for women who have to go through this trauma and we cannot continue to neglect our responsibility to provide reasonable care for these women in Ireland. The government should not be afraid to propose a referendum to amend Article 40.3.3, which is currently prohibiting legislation dealing with this issue. Allowing for abortion in the case of a non-viable foetal abnormality where the child has no chance for survival following birth is simple common sense and should be prioritised by government," he continued.

Speaking in favour of the motion, Eileen Lynch, member of the YFG National Executive said:

"Introducing this legislation will not open flood gates, it would simply provide for abortion in these limited circumstances does not mean the provision would be widely used. It merely provides an option for women who are in extraordinarily difficult circumstances where they are experiencing cases of ectopic pregnancies and cases of fatal foetal abnormality."
