Waterford YFG demands enquiry into pension fund debacle – Cummins

Young Fine Gael in Waterford have expressed solidarity with the workers in Waterford Crystal and their families. In a strongly worded statement they condemned the receiver for his actions in closing the factory without any prior consultation with the workers and their union.

John Cummins stated "This type of arrogance is totally unacceptable in this day and age. Yes a receiver only looks at the bottom line, but surely people working twenty, thirty and forty years in a factory deserved greater respect and understanding".

Expressing the wish that a new buyer is found and that manufacturing can be maintained in Waterford, the YFG Chairman went on to say "the government should not be found wanting in assisting any new buyers and assisting the workers who have paid into a pension fund all their lives and now find that there is nothing there for them. We are calling for a high level enquiry to ascertain where the money went and if it is found that any wrong doing occurred, then the full rigors of the law should be applied".

He concluded by stating "Waterford without Waterford Crystal just doesn't add up. The heart and soul of the city has been torn asunder this week. It is also important in the midst of this tragedy that the workers in Baush and Lomb and their families are not forgotten as they suffer what is in affect a 25% decrease in wages".
