Statement on the Death of Former Taoiseach and Founder of Young Fine Gael Garret FitzGerald

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of former Taoiseach Dr. Garret FitzGerald.

"Garret was a Taoiseach, Minister for Foreign Affairs and leader of Fine Gael, but he will be remembered by all as a true Statesman," stated YFG President, Eric Keane.

"Garret FitzGerald founded Young Fine Gael in 1977 as part of the organisational revolution he started within Fine Gael. He ensured the voice of young people was heard at the highest level. On behalf of so many young people who owe him so much we want to thank Dr. FitzGerald for his hard work and dedication to ensuring their voices were heard. On each occasion that he spoke to us, he emphasised the onus on our generation to seize the future and make it our own.

"He dedicated his life to the service of our country. Whether in office or not, Garret FitzGerald always thought of the future of Ireland. He dedicated his time in public office to securing peace in Northern Ireland, gaining membership of the EEC and fixing our broken economy. He committed to all of these with boundless energy and enthusiasm. This energy was driven by the vision of creating a modern Ireland.

"Today our thoughts are with the FitzGerald family as they come to terms with their loss. We extend our deep sympathies to them at this time and thank them for sharing such a great mind with us all.

"Garret was a prophetic man, an intellectual voice, a visionary who demanded the best, an ideologue who never wavered, a man who has a special place in the hearts and minds of so many members and a man to whom so many young people are grateful".
