Scapegoating young people, a step backwards in road safety!

Young Fine Gael President Barry Walsh today criticised the Road Safety Authorities consultation process by saying it seeks to scapegoat young learner drivers. “The consultation document seeks to portray an image of learner drivers as those most likely to be caught drink driving with no evidence to back this up.

“It further discriminates against young people by proposing they should have an almost zero alcohol level while driving. Are we to conclude that the RSA believe a person’s ability to drive under the influence of alcohol improves with experience?

“If alcohol limits are changed for one cohort of drivers it should be the same across the board. I note that there is no consultation process to conclude at what upper age an individual should be precluded from driving. Nor any questions on whether those driving at 50 kph in an 80kph zone are a danger to other road users.

“The RSA should concentrate on teaching young people to drive properly by creating driving modules during transition year at school rather than singling them out as a danger to others.”
