Philip Slattery

Name: Philip Slattery

Age: 27

Candidate in: Celbridge/Leixlip

YFG/FG branches: YFG Branches South Kildare YFG, DIT YFG, UL YFG and Celbridge Fine Gael

Why did you decide to run in the locals: Over the years I have seen a number of things in Celbridge that need to be fixed or improved and they have not been done. So im running because I believe they can be fixed and want to give the people of Celbridge/Leixlip a fresh young voice. I am running on 4 main issues.

To prioritise better transport link to the area by improving the Dublin Bus weekend service from Celbridge to Dublin City and working to get a Celbridge Leixlip link.

To encourage more businesses to set up in Celbridge nad Leixlip village as its worth twice the money to the local economy to shop in local independent shops that the big stores. This will be done by working with Landlords and the council to break the barriers and cost to setting up and running a business.

To ensure and effective County Council works for you and that people understand why the council is spending it money and ensuring value for the Irish Tax Payer.

To deal with youth issues and provide more local amenities. While the population of the area has grown over the years there has not really been the increase in the amenities to go with that growth. So im looking to get more for the people especially the younger people to give them an alternative to hanging around on the street corners and outside shops.

Why did you join YFG/FG: Since the age of 12 I have read every bit of political literature that came through my door and over and over again Fine Gael made the most sense. So when I went to DIT and saw the YFG stand decided to sign up and I have never regretted that decision.

Your greatest achievement: Speaking at the dyspraxia conference as a main speaker in 2006, getting nominated to run for YFG National Panel, being elected Chairperson of DIT YFG and finally graduating with a masters in Taxation.

Favourite quote: Taken from the west wing;
Bartlet: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed people can change the world. Do you know why?

Will: Because it's the only thing that ever has.
