Noel Rock - News - Young Fine Gael

Noel Rock

Name: Noel Rock

Age: 26

Candidate in: Glasnevin/Drumcondra/Whitehall/Ballymun

YFG/FG branches: Dublin North West Stephen McSweeney Branch FG, Alfie Byrne YFG, formerly DCU YFG

Why did you decide to run in the locals: I think that Dublin needs strong representation, and fresh new ideas. I'm running to attempt to reduce the property tax in Dublin City Council by 15%. I'm running to ensure that the Council is working closely with local Gardai, as crime is a problematic issue and we need to work on solutions together. I'm running to work towards an end to the unreceipted, unvouched system of expenses, and to make sure that we can restore people's trust in politics. I'm running in the only area in the country where Fine Gael have no national presence, so I believe it's important that we have as strong a Council presence as possible. My own experience is international: I've worked in the US Senate, the European Parliament and the Irish Oireachtas, and I want to take that experience and use it for the benefit of my local community, where I grew up, went to school, and have lived most of my life.

Why did you join YFG/FG: In 2007, I sat down with each of the party manifestoes in front of me, and based on the policies and the recent history of each party, I decided that Fine Gael's track record of putting country first and working to bring about real political reform was what I believed in then and it's what I believe in now.

Your greatest achievement: When I was 18, I had the honour of working in Senator Hillary Clinton's Washington DC Senate office. I was the only non-American there, and it was truly a formative experience (I wanted to be a journalist up until then) as well as an absolute eye-opener. I realised how much one person really can change politics from the bottom up, and I thought that it was something I wanted to engage in.

Favourite quote: Progress is a nice word. But change is its motivator. And change has its enemies. (Robert F Kennedy)
