Harris launches campaign against cutbacks in special need education

Fine Gael Candidate to launch campaign on Friday morning calling on people to register their protest at proposed cutbacks in special need cutbacks with the Minister for Education.

Fine Gael Representative and disability advocate Simon Harris will distribute literature to Greystones Dart users on Friday morning from 6.30am until 8.30am outlining what he describes as the "vicious and harrowing cutbacks in special needs education" and urging people to contact the Minister for Education outlining their disgust and opposition to these cuts.

Speaking about his plans to launch this campaign, Mr Harris said, "In politics there will always be disagreement amongst parties on how best to make savings, etc and I very much believe that the current Government has behaved recklessly and irresponsibly in this regard. However, these latest cutbacks to withdraw 128 special needs teaching posts across 119 schools including schools in Greystones and throughout County Wicklow signals a new low - we now have a situation whereby the most vulnerable children within our education system are being asked to take a hit whilst the Government pours billions of our money into a black hole in a banking system with flawed practices."

" The Government projects that these latest cutbacks will only save €7 million which is truly a small amount in the grand scheme of things. I have no doubt that these savings could be found elsewhere. This decision is short-sighted as it will result in some children in our education system never being able to reach their full potential and thus the State will effectively have to pick up a costly tab at a later stage," continued Mr Harris.

"As a politician but much more importantly as a disability advocate and a brother to a child with special needs I am asking people to join with me in opposing these cutbacks in special needs education. Whilst people's time is precious, I will be at Greystones Dart Station on Friday morning asking people to register their opposition to these cutbacks on special needs education with the Minister for Education. We simply cannot tolerate these harsh, irrational, illogical and short-sighted cutbacks which will damage the educational provision afforded to children with special needs in Greystones, Kilcoole and beyond," concluded Mr Harris.
