Government must adjust to reality to help the jobless!

Young Fine Gael (YFG) President, Barry Walsh, has today (Friday) called on the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan to seriously consider the criteria for entry to the graduate Work Placement Programme.

Today's CSO live register figures indicate that there are 95,412 people under- 25 on the live register, with an increase of 3,657 last month alone.

The objective of the Work Placement Programme is to provide work experience for unemployed persons, including graduates.

However, only those who have been on the live register for six months or more can apply for the scheme. According to Barry Walsh, "This penalises graduates who have chosen to do part-time or low paid work in preference to signing on the live register.

"In response to a Parliamentary question from Leo Varadkar TD on the issue the Minster has refused to re-consider this position. Given that unemployment rates for under-25s have risen by 170% in the past two years the Minister should use every avenue available to keep young people from becoming long-term unemployed.

"Her intransigence on this is typical of a Government that can't think on it's feet or adjust to circumstances."
