Fine Gael unveils youngest Waterford Candidate

Twenty-one year old John Cummins has been selected to contest the local elections for Fine Gael in Waterford City South (Ward 3). The selection convention was held in the Granville Hotel on Friday last. The large attendance selected him along with outgoing councillor Mary O'Halloran.

John is Chairman of the very active Young Fine Gael branch in Waterford City which has campaigned on many issues since its foundation two years ago including University status for Waterford, a fairer speed limit on the outer ring road dual carriageway, retention of St. Brigid's ward until a new unit is provided and the preservation of manufacturing at Waterford Crystal.

A resident of Ursuline Court, John is involved with many clubs and organisations throughout the city. Currently he is a player with Hibernian FC and De La Salle GAA club where he also coaches underage teams. He has been involved with the scouting movement for many years and has worked with many local musical societies. John is also coordinator of the Sacred Heart Parish youth council.

Son of Senator Maurice Cummins who represented the ward with great distinction for almost twenty years, John is hoping to bring a new, fresh approach to local politics in Waterford city and will be actively canvassing for support over the coming months in the run up to election day on June 5th 2009.
