Fine Gael selects Harris for Wicklow County Council - News - Young Fine Gael

Fine Gael selects Harris for Wicklow County Council

The Greystones Electoral District of Fine Gael which includes Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole and Newcastle has unanimously selected Simon Harris to run for Wicklow County Council alongside sitting Cllrs George Jones and Derek Mitchell. Mr Harris had previously been selected to run for Greystones Town Council.

At 22 years of age, Simon is one of the youngest political candidates in the country - however, despite his young age he has accomplished much already - including most significantly founding the Wicklow-based Autism charity, The Wicklow Triple A Alliance.

Speaking after his nomination at the Fine Gael Convention, Mr Harris stated, "I am so honoured to join this ticket and to have been selected unanimously by Fine Gael members from all over my district - Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole and Newcastle. This is an exciting time in politics - we are facing into a stringent economic situation and people are understandably disillusioned with politics that has failed them in many areas - in the provision of essential services, of health care, of adequate education, of job creation and of fairness and transparency. I look forward to bringing a new approach to politics and involving a new generation in political and community life in County Wicklow."

"I am overwhelmed by the support, good wishes and encouragement which I have received to date from people across the community. Politics is a tough business particularly when starting out - however, I am determined to put my experience as a disability advocate, a community activist and as someone born, reared and educated here to good use. I relish the thought of going down to Wicklow County Council and seeking new and innovative ways of doing our business - I want to work with the community, with residents' groups, voluntary groups and business groups to promote projects and initiatives which will benefit our locality," continued Mr Harris.

"I look forward to putting forward a new, positive agenda for our county," concluded Mr Harris
