Enda Kenny launches Youth Manifesto

'Let's get Young Ireland Working'

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has today (Tuesday) outlined the core elements of the Party's plan to improve the lives of Ireland's young people, as set out in the Young Fine Gael Youth Manifesto.Speaking at the launch where he was joined by 17 young Fine Gael candidates, Enda Kenny said: 'At the heart of the current economic crisis is an unemployment crisis. 300,000 jobs in Ireland - 14% of the total – have been wiped out since the recession took hold and 100,000 people, mostly young people, will emigrate over the next two years'.

"Unemployment has hit the young the hardest. One in three young men under 25 are unemployed. 84% of job losses have been among those aged under 35 and 55% of all job losses among those aged under 25.

"Fine Gael plans to get young Ireland working. We have a clear credible jobs plan that will create 20,000 jobs every year over the next five years by focusing on spending cuts rather than job-destroying tax increases.

"We will also provide 45,000 work placements including National Internship Programme places in private and voluntary sectors, 17,000 Second Chance Education places for former retail and construction workers who did not complete their education, 5,000 Community Employment places and new opportunities for apprentices.*

"Further to these fundamental measures the Fine Gael Youth Manifesto is about giving young people hope. We need a new political plan so a new government can engage, again, with young people whose hearts have been broken, whose dreams have been ruined, whose trust has been shattered by old government, old politics, and an old system.

"Young people have been hardest hit by the blatant mismanagement of the economy. Their future has been mortgaged to finance the lavish lifestyles of others. It's time to put an end to that. Fine Gael offers strong stable government that will create jobs, reform the public sector, the health sector and politics. We will introduce fairer Budgets, keeping taxes low. Our policies will keep young people at home in Ireland with their families and friends.

"We will put quality education at the heart of plans for economic recovery, giving equal access to third level education for all students. There is a way out of the situation into which Ireland has been led by Michéal Martin's Fianna Fáil. This is an opportunity for strong leadership to bring fundamental change to the way our country works.

"Fine Gael will take on vested interests and won't bow to bankers or developers. We ask for a strong mandate from young Ireland to bring fundamental change. The need to restore trust has never been stronger. Irish young people deserve better, the Fine Gael Five Point plan will give them better."
