Ellen O Connor

Name: Ellen O'Connor

Age: 20

Candidate in: Dún Laoghaire Local Electoral Area

YFG/FG branches: I am a member of Trinity Young Fine Gael and Dalkey/Glasthule Fine Gael.

Why did you decide to run in the locals: One of the main reasons that I decided to run in the Local Elections is that I believe Dún Laoghaire – Rathdown County Council must do more to support local businesses, in particular those on Dún Laoghaire High Street. I am proposing that the Council introduce a "Living Over the Shop Scheme", whereby landlords would be given tax incentives to rent out the vacant upper story space on the High Street; this will help to bring life back to the heart of Dún Laoghaire town. If elected, I will also advocate for a reduction in commercial rates for local businesses. Secondly, I want to ensure that taxpayers are getting the best value for their money and that Dún Laoghaire – Rathdown County Council spends tax payer's money in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

Why did you join YFG/FG: One of the main reasons that I joined Young Fine Gael was that I, like many people my age, was concerned about finding employment when I leave college. I believe that Fine Gael is the party which has the policies that create the environment where jobs can be created. We have seen this under this Fine Gael led Government, with over 1000 jobs, on average, being created a week over the past year.

Your greatest achievement: I was honoured to have been selected as a first-time Local Election candidate for the Dún Laoghaire Electoral Area. I have also volunteered with Dublin South Junior Arch Club, a local organisation that assists children with special needs. For the past year, I have been working as a Student Mentor with first year college students, helping them make that daunting transition from secondary school to college!
