Do the Green Party think my Wicklow constituents are stupid? - Harris

Green Party and Fianna Fail abolish 820 teaching posts this year and then try to herald 500 "new" teaching posts over three years as a major achievement!

Fine Gael's Wicklow County Councillor Simon Harris has decried the attempt by the Green Party and Fianna Fail to fool people on the issue of teaching posts in their long-awaited Programme for Government.

Speaking about the education section in the new Programme for Government, Councillor Harris said, "The Green Party has sat around the Cabinet table with Fianna Fail for over two and a half years. They voted for all the education cuts – cuts which have resulted in schools in my constituency losing teaching posts, resources, Special Needs Assistants and having to deal with larger class sizes."

"This year alone the Government has abolished 820 teaching posts. The new Programme for Government absurdly ignores this fact and promises 500 new teaching posts over three years. The Green Party has described this as a great achievement and has spun it as the creation of additional teaching posts. Clearly, the Green Party and Fianna Fail need to go back to school and learn some basic maths. Even after three years, if the Government delivers on its promise on 500 posts, it will still be 320 less teachers than we had at the beginning of this year," continued Councillor Harris.

"Lets face facts – this Government – represented in County Wicklow by Minister Roche – has presided over an attack on education and our children's future. Their aspirational rhetoric in this new face saving Programme for Government will not fool my constituents and will not help children, teachers and schools in County Wicklow. Minister Roche, Fianna Fail and the Green Party should hang their heads in shame", said Councillor Harris.

"The people of this county and this country want an election so they can deliver their verdict on this Government and enact the change we all yearn for. Cowardly Government spin will not deter the will of the people," concluded Councillor Harris.
